Every 10 years California must redraw its district lines, which determines its state political districts. For the first time, the responsibility of drawing State Senate, Assembly, and Board of Equalization district lines will be in the hands of the people.

The California State Auditor has launched a campaign to inform Californians about the State's new redistricting process and to encourage registered voters to participate in a new Citizens Redistricting Commission (commission).

Why is this important?

  • Californians Made It Happen-Californians voted for this and should take advantage of the historic event.
  • Unprecedented Opportunity-For the first time in our State's history, ordinary citizens will draw the lines for State Senate, Assembly, and Board of Equalization districts.
  • Momentous Chance-Californians have the chance to serve on the very first, in the nation, redistricting commission truly made up of independently selected citizens!
  • Fair Representation-You can help provide fair representation for all Californians and make sure your community voice is heard.

The application period commenced on December 15, 2009, and runs through February 12, 2010.

Members of the commission will be compensated $300 for each day the member is engaged in commission business. Further, these commissioners will be eligible for reimbursement of personal expenses incurred in connection with the commission duties performed, including travel.

Serving on the commission is a public service engagement, much like jury duty, and no employer may discharge, threaten to discharge, or retaliate against any employee for attending or participating in meetings/activities of the commission.

If you have any questions regarding redistricting, or would like to know more ways to become involved in this effort, please do not hesitate to contact Margarita Fernandez, Chief of Public Affairs for the California State Auditor, at (916) 445-0255 or go to the State Auditor's website at WeDrawTheLines.ca.gov.

What is Redistricting?

Drawing district lines was historically a duty of California lawmakers.
