Help Draw California's Political Lines

Every 10 years California redraws legislative district lines, which determines its state political districts. For the first time, the responsibility of drawing State Senate, Assembly, and Board of Equalization district lines will be in the hands of the people. A 14 member statewide Citizens Redistricting Commission will be chosen to redraw the lines, and registered voters are encouraged apply to serve as members of this commission.

While San Bernardino County represents about 5.4 percent of the State's population, only 5,264 have applied to be on the commission, that's about 2 percent of total applicants. In contrast, Sacramento County which has about 3 percent of the States residents represents nearly 20 percent of the commission's qualified applicants. It is imperative that San Bernardino county and the Inland Empire be fairly represented in this process and I strong encourage all qualified registered voters to consider applying by the February 12, 2010 deadline.

Why is this important?

  • Californians Made It Happen - Californians voted for this and should take advantage of the historic event.
  • Unprecedented Opportunity - For the first time in our State's history, citizens will draw the lines for State Senate, Assembly, and Board of Equalization districts.
  • Momentous Chance - Californians have the chance to serve on the very first, in the nation, redistricting commission truly made up of independently selected citizens
  • !
  • Fair Representation - You can help provide fair representation for all Californians and make sure your community voice is heard.

The application period commenced on December 15, 2009, and runs through February 12, 2010. Members of the commission will be compensated $300 for each day the member is engaged in commission business. The commissioners will be eligible for reimbursement of personal expenses incurred in connection with the commission duties performed, including travel. Serving on the commission is a public service engagement, much like jury duty, and no employer may discharge, threaten to discharge, or retaliate against any employee for attending or participating in meetings/activities of the commission.
