California's Budget

This January, Governor Jerry Brown released his proposed budget for 2012-2013. The Governor projected a $9.1 billion deficit and proposed to balance it with a mix of spending cuts and a tax package that would require approval of the voters in November 2012.

Senate Democrats have committed to fully vetting the Governor's proposed budget in public with input from all stakeholders. The Senate Budget and Fiscal Review Committee and its issue-specific budget subcommittees will begin that review January 19, 2012.

In May, the Governor used updated revenue receipts to offer revisions to his proposed 2012-2013 Budget. The revised spending plan estimated that the state has a $16.7 billion budget gap. The Legislature reviewed, amended and passed a finalized 2012-2013 Budget on June 15, 2012.
