SB 1193: Green Schools Bill
No. of Jobs
1,680
Category
Invest state and federal funds to create jobs
Proposal
This bill streamlines distribution of the state’s Proposition 1D funds – creating jobs, lowering school energy costs, and creating healthier environments for our children.
Summary
The K-12 Energy Cost Savings Stimulus Program (energy program) will provide school district operational cost savings from energy efficiencies, thus freeing up critically needed dollars. This stimulus program will provide funding for energy efficiency and energy generation projects, creating construction jobs in our communities.
Background
As a result of the economy and recent budget cuts, school districts have been forced to make severe cuts to programs, including laying off teachers and administrators. California’s construction industry has also been hard hit by the worldwide economic crisis and California’s housing market decline. Nonetheless, bureaucratic red tape has caused some $80 million now available in High Performance Incentive Grant Program funds (Proposition 1D, 2006) to remain unclaimed.
The K-12 Energy Cost Savings Stimulus Program quickly enables funding for energy efficiency and energy generation projects, providing construction jobs, lowering schools’ energy consumption, and saving money critically needed for school programs and teachers.
